Medical Equipment and Dementia

As we age the need for specialty medical equipment is a given.  However, patients with cognitive decline can create difficulties when using this equipment.

A high low bed is amazing benefit but can lead to increased risk of falls of the bed is elevated to an unsafe height.  For this reason we recommend always selecting a bed frame with lockout capability when the user suffers from cognitive decline. We offer several products including the Span America Advantage Bed, the the Span America Advantage Ready Wide Bed, and the SonderCare Aura Bed, that are all equipped with this feature with the specific models we carry.  These beds can be locked at any height so that the user is unable to elevate the bed to an unsafe height without a caregiver present.  With independently lockable motors you can choose which features are available on the hand pendant and which you do not want to work.  Depending on the bed you choose the lockout feature will either be accomplished on the foot end control or via a key fob.

The same concern is evident with power wheelchairs.  Our popular IQ9000 from ComfyGo has a lockout feature that will lock the mobility of the chair when you do want the user to continue being able to move the chair.

There is a fine line between proving your loved with the tools to maintain their independence and providing too much freedom that it can lead to risk of injury.  These products allow you to determine how much control is allotted at a given point in time.  To learn more about lockout capability and how and when to implement it give us a call at 1-888-939-0002
