Quiet, Efficient Low Air Loss System with Smart Pressure Therapy

The PressureGuard® Protocol® Mattress by Span-America offers advanced microclimate management and proven pressure redistribution in a quiet, energy-efficient system. Designed for alternating pressure or powered flotation therapy, the Protocol enhances patient comfort while protecting against skin breakdown, maceration, and moisture buildup.

Its Microclimate Management system delivers airflow beneath a highly vapor-permeable coverlet, sweeping away excess moisture vapor before it can reform as liquid. The Protocol is easy to use and includes caregiver-friendly features like Auto Firm Mode, a Safety Edge™ for stable transfers, and a power outage-safe inflation design. Available with or without raised perimeter bolsters.

Key Features:

  • Microclimate Management: Air Diffusion Matrix™ liner channels airflow to remove excess moisture vapor
  • Alternating Pressure & Powered Flotation Modes: Customizable therapy based on patient needs
  • Auto Firm Mode: Temporarily provides a firm surface for repositioning or transfers, then resumes therapy automatically
  • Quiet Operation: Energy-efficient design uses less power and produces less heat and noise than typical systems
  • Safety Edge™ Perimeter: Enhances edge-of-bed stability and gently guides patient back to center
  • Proven PressureGuard® Design: Air cylinders run head to foot for better support in seated or supine positions
  • Geo-Matt® Top Layer: Segmented foam improves comfort, immersion, and skin protection

Doc said my mom needed a low air loss mattress. This seems to be working great. The sore on her back side has already shown a noticeable difference in about two weeks.

Best air mattress we've tried

We've used a few low air loss systems before and this one is by far the most consistent in pressure and comfort.

My mom was on this same mattress in a high end nursing home and it healed her wounds in a matter of weeks. We opted to buy the same one for her assisted living and to date she has not experienced any skin breakdown since sleeping on this mattress. It has also helped with preventing yeast build up because she sweats a lot.

Took time to adjust settings

Works well once we got the pressure just right, but required some trial and error in the beginning.

Excellent air flow and temperature control

No more overheating during sleep. The airflow design works great for temperature-sensitive patients.

What makes the Protocol mattress different from other low air loss systems?

It combines alternating pressure and powered flotation therapy with microclimate control—while remaining energy-efficient and quiet.

Does Protocol mattress require electricity at all times?

The control unit powers the therapy modes, but the mattress remains inflated for a limited time during power loss.

How does Auto Firm Mode work?

It provides a firmer surface for transfers or caregiving tasks, then automatically returns to the chosen therapy mode after 20 minutes.

Can the Protocol mattress be used in a home care setting?

Yes, it’s suitable for both institutional and at-home use, especially for patients with pressure injury risk.

Comes with a 18 months warranty on all components.
